What is TMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a noninvasive and FDA-approved procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is a safe and effective treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and is most often used for patients that have not responded to other treatments, such as medication and psychotherapy.

TMS therapy is typically performed at an outpatient setting such as NuBalance Behavioral Health by using an FDA-approved device like the Apollo TMS Therapy System. This device delivers magnetic pulses to the brain, creating small electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells, regulating brain activity and potentially restoring normal brain function. TMS therapy for depression is typically used to stimulate the left prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is involved in mood regulation.

The initial course of treatment typically consists of 5 treatments per week over a 6-week period. Patients must be currently prescribed multiple medications for depression to be eligible for treatment.

Consult with your healthcare provider to determine if TMS is appropriate for your specific needs and your insurance provider to determine if you are covered.
